Legal weed in Canada… Canna-confused?

Recreational Weed is here! Although medical cannabis has been available in Canada since July 2001 when health Canada established the ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulation), it became recreationally legal in Canada on October 17 2018.

So… What’s allowed?

These are the basic rules, and may vary based on province and municipality. I’ve provided a link at the bottom for more information.

  • No person may sell or provide cannabis to any person under the age of 18. If over 18, you can purchase dried or fresh cannabis, cannabis oil, and starting materials from a licenced retailer. In those provinces/territories without a regulated retail framework, individuals are able to purchase cannabis online from federally licensed producers
  • You can possess up to 30 grams of cannabis dried or equivalent in non-dried form in public. NOTE: One (1) gram of dried cannabis is equal to: 5 grams of fresh cannabis, 15 grams of edible product, 70 grams of liquid product, 0.25 grams of concentrates (solid or liquid), or 1 cannabis plant seed.
  • You can share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults.
  • You can grow 4 plants per household.
  • You can transport plants only in a vegetative state only, not while in flower.
  • A clone counts as one plant. If you air-clone (on-plant cloning), the new growing clones do not count as new plant while they’re growing their root-ball still attached to the mother plant. They DO count as a plant once it has been cut/removed from the mother plant.
  • Those with cannabis prescriptions can still order through their licensed producer and posses their medical limit. If you have a medical cannabis prescription, you can grow the 4 plants per household, but you require additional approval through health Canada to grow your prescription under ACMPR.
  • Edibles are not legal to purchase yet, however you can make your own at home as long as organic solvents are not used. Be careful as edibles have a longer wait time to kick-in, and last longer than the inhaled or vaped version. Edibles can be strong! Start off small – You can always add, but you can’t take away what you’ve already ingested.
  • Do not drive under the influence of cannabis. Plan your set and setting.
